Jones traveled to St. Petersburg to learn the national fighting style of sambo, or self-defense without weapons. It was a serious sport with serious people, but outside of practice Jones experienced homemade vodka and a traditional Russian bathhouse. You can easily find both on a visit to this northern city, where the summer sun offers up long days and “white nights.” The baroque Winter Palace, home to the Hermitage Museum, is a must-see, as are museums dedicated to literary figures from Fyodor Dostoyevsky to Leo Tolstoy. Stroll along the Neva River, visit St. Isaac’s Cathedral, which still shows evidence of shelling from the siege of Leningrad during World War II — and take in a ballet at the Mariinsky Theater.

National Ice Cream Day was established in 1984 by President Reagan. It takes place the third Sunday in July. Ice cream provides jobs for many Americans so support this industry by enjoying a cold serving at one of these fine establishments near you.
Carvel Ice Cream is offering a free kids cup or cone in honor of National Ice Cream Day with an adult purchase. See their facebook page for more information.
Baskin-Robbins: Kids can sign up for the birthday club and get free ice cream on their birthday as well as a discount on a birthday cake. The flavor of the month is Super Soldier Swirl.
Mother's Day morning, my 4-year-old woke up with a rash. It was my 16th Mother's Day. I was inclined to ignore rashes. But a note had just come home from day care reporting a case of strep in Leo's classroom, so I dutifully felt his forehead, noted it was hot, and made an appointment at a medical office with Sunday hours. While waiting for the results of the strep test, feeling bored and somewhat sorry for myself, I snapped a photo of my son on the exam table playfully covering his face with his blankie, which I then posted to Facebook with the following caption: "Nothing says Happy Mother's Day quite like a Sunday morning at the pediatrician's."
The rapid strep test came back negative, but none of my three kids' in-office strep tests have ever come back positive, even when they have strep. Plus Leo's fever was on the rise. "He looks really streppy," said the doctor on call. "I think we should treat him for strep, and if his throat culture comes back negative, you can reassess with your family doctor."
"Great," I said, happy to have the prescription for Amoxicillin in hand. I was on a tight deadline to hand in revisions on my new novel. The fewer days of daycare Leo missed, the better. I logged onto Facebook and saw that many of my friends and "friends" had already commented under the new photo, wanting to know what was wrong. Three years earlier, when I reluctantly joined Facebook in an effort to monitor the online bullying of my eldest, it was inconceivable to me that complete strangers would ever fret over my child's welfare, never mind that the act of posting itself has become as integral to my daily existence as talking, writing, thinking, dreaming.
Presidents aging in office How presidents aged during office President Barack Obama's graying hair is all the talk . Most experts say the unending stress our commanders in chief face in office causes them to age twice as fast . Here we take a look at how some recent presidents aged in office, the difficult issues they faced, their vices and what they did for stress relief. Barack Obama There has been plenty of commentary about the physical effects the presidency is taking on our current president . Some say he's aged a decade in just two years . He's had his share of high-stakes decisions already, not to mention the pressure of being the first African-American president. George W. Bush He already had some gray hair but gained more, plus a few wrinkles , during his tumultuous presidency . The stress during his time in office was aggravated by terrorist attacks and going to war. Bill Clinton The third-youngest president , Clinton looked youthful at his inauguration but left office with a full head of gray hair . A scandal overshadowed his accomplishments, yet he still received high end-of-office approval ratings. George H.W. Bush His appearance didn't change nearly as much as his son's did in office . Maybe that was partly due to his past experience. During his presidential term, he led the nation in the Gulf war and had to break his famous campaign promise of "no new taxes." Ronald Reagan Our oldest president was able to hang on to his movie-star good looks , with only a touch of gray hair at the end. His optimism probably helped him survive a near-fatal assassination attempt and also this scandal. Jimmy Carter He wasn't much worse for wear after leaving office, aside from being a little thinner and grayer on top , probably due in part to keeping active and a solid marriage. The final year of his presidential tenure was marked by a hostage crisis, but he is also known for championing human rights Lyndon B. Johnson Called "the accidental president," he stepped into office after this popular president was assassinated, which would be enough to give anyone some gray hair . He was in office during the tumult of the civil rights movement and oversaw the nation's escalating involvement in the Vietnam War. Dwight D. Eisenhower Ike didn't have much hair upon inauguration, but sported a few more wrinkles at the end of his presidency . A war hero, he was no stranger to stress Franklin D. Roosevelt He was in poor health in his final term and died in office, but he served an unprecedented four terms and had to deal with World War II and the Great Depression, which inspired these famous words. Casey Anthony freed, heads for mystery destination

Casey Anthony was freed from jail early Sunday, and her representatives whisked her away to a mystery destination.
She wore a bright pink Polo v-neck top as she was escorted out of the Orange County Jail shortly after midnight by her attorney Jose Baez and several heavily armed law enforcement officers. Anthony went to a waiting SUV, which whisked her away in a convoy closely followed by media helicopters.
Neither Anthony nor Baez said anything to the hundreds of reporters, spectators and protesters gathered outside. She said thank you to one of the sergeants on her way out, NBC News video journalist Tony Zumbado told msnbc cable television. Zumbado was one of three journalists allowed into the jail to witness the release.
The Orlando Sentinel said some in the crowd shouted: "Killer!"
"It is my hope that Casey Anthony can receive the counseling and treatment she needs to move forward with the rest of her life," Baez said in a statement released to reporters.
'Carmageddon' begins: Los Angeles freeway shuts down

A 10-mile stretch of one of the nation's busiest freeways has turned into a virtual ghost road.
Interstate 405, a California freeway normally so clogged that locals like to joke that its name is shorthand for "traffic that moves no faster than 4 or 5 miles an hour," closed for 53 hours for a major construction project beginning early Saturday that will test whether this car-dependent city can change its driving habits for a weekend.
Crews systematically began closing on- and off-ramps beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, then began lane closures at 10 p.m. At midnight Saturday the entire 10-mile section that runs through the Sepulveda Pass was shut down.
For weeks, authorities have urged Los Angeles-area residents to avoid getting in their car, lest they trigger what's been hyped as "Carmageddon."
Such an event could back up vehicles from the 405 to surface streets and other freeways, causing a domino effect that could paralyze much of the city. A blog post on the Los Angeles Times website put the delay at up to 20 miles.
